One Day, They Won't Shout Mum Like This

“MUM!”

I hear it approximately 847 times a day.

Mum, where are my shoes?

Mum, they're looking at me.

Mum, can I have a snack?

Mum, the dog ate it.

Mum, I need you.

Sometimes I hide in the kitchen pretending I can't hear them.

Sometimes I fantasise about drinking an entire cup of tea while it's still hot.

And sometimes, when the sixth “MUUUUM!” comes from another room, I wonder if changing my name is legally an option.

But tonight, the house finally went quiet.

Six little people asleep.

Tiny socks abandoned on the floor. Cups beside beds. Toys everywhere.

And suddenly I realised...

One day, nobody will shout “Mum!” from upstairs.

Nobody will climb into my bed at 3am.

Nobody will need me to find the thing that's literally in their hand.

The hallway will be tidy.

The washing basket might even be empty.

And I'd probably give anything to hear just one more...

“MUUUUUM!”

So tomorrow, when they shout it for the 848th time, I'll probably still roll my eyes.

I'm only human.

But I'll try to remember:

These are the days I'll miss while I'm still living them.

Even the loud ones.
